History of South PTO and South Elementary

Deep Roots in our Community

South School joined the Andover School System on September 8, 1958, with 490 students and 15 teachers.

Our predecessor organization was called The Ballardvale Parent-Teacher Association, organized in 1929 as a unit of the Massachusetts and National Parent-Teacher Associations by Mrs. George Whitting, who was then President of the Massachusetts Association. The first President was Mrs. Miles Ward who served in that capacity for two years. Read more about the history of the South School on the South School APS web site.

South School Council

Would you like like to help implement new ideas and improve South School? We now have a way to do so – the South School Council. The South School Council representatives will help with the following key tasks:

1. Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards;

2. Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school;

3. Reviewing the annual school building budget; and

4. Formulating a school improvement plan.

The South School Council will be made up of South School parents, teachers, and “other persons drawn from such groups or entities as municipal government, business and labor organizations, institutions of higher education, human service agencies or other interested groups, including those from school-age child care programs.” South School Council will have four (4) parents, four (4) teachers and one (1) community member.
